Ayurveda doesn't pretend everyone is the same. Long before modern science talked about chronotypes or metabolic phenotypes, Ayurvedic physicians were classifying people into three constitutional types — the three doshas. Knowing yours isn't just trivia. It shapes how you should eat, sleep, exercise, and supplement.
The three doshas, briefly
Vata — air and space
Vata types tend to be light-framed, quick-thinking, and creative. Their movement is fast — both body and mind. When in balance, they're imaginative and energetic. When out of balance, they're anxious, sleepless, and prone to dry skin and digestive irregularity.
Common signs of Vata imbalance: restlessness, light sleep, joint stiffness, cold hands and feet, irregular appetite.
Pitta — fire and water
Pitta types are medium build, sharp-minded, and naturally driven. They run warm — physically and metaphorically. In balance, they're focused, articulate, and decisive. Out of balance, they're impatient, prone to inflammation, and can burn out quickly.
Common signs of Pitta imbalance: acidity, irritability, heat in the body, skin breakouts, sharp hunger.
Kapha — earth and water
Kapha types have steady energy, strong builds, and a calm temperament. They are the loyal, grounded ones. In balance, they're nurturing and resilient. Out of balance, they're sluggish, congested, and slow to start.
Common signs of Kapha imbalance: heaviness in the body, slow digestion, lethargy in the morning, attachment to old patterns.
Most of us are dual-type
Pure single doshas are uncommon. Most people are dominant in two — Vata-Pitta, Pitta-Kapha, or Vata-Kapha — with one slightly stronger. That blend is your prakriti, your unchanging baseline. What goes out of balance day-to-day is your vikriti — your current imbalance.
Why this matters for what you put in your body
Ayurvedic herbs aren't generic boosters. They're matched to imbalances. Ashwagandha calms Vata. Brahmi cools Pitta. Triphala wakes up sluggish Kapha digestion. The same herb can help one person and aggravate another.
This is also why "I tried that supplement, it didn't work for me" is so common in Western wellness. Often it did work — just not for that body, in that state, at that time.
How to start figuring out your type
You don't need a vaidya for the basics. Pay attention to:
- Build: are you slender, medium, or solid?
- Skin: dry, warm-and-reddish, or smooth-and-cool?
- Sleep: light, sound, or heavy?
- Stress response: do you get anxious, irritable, or withdrawn?
Patterns emerge quickly. From there, choose herbs that meet you where you are — not where someone else's wellness influencer is.
Where Vaidra fits
Each Vaidra formula is built around one purpose, and we've matched our six ranges to common imbalances people face today: energy (Shakti), calm (Manas), joints (Sandhi), hair (Keshaya), digestion (Agniva), and immunity (Ojas). Pick the one that fits where you are right now — not where you wish you were.
